One in Seven People Experience Tinnitus

Posted in Hearing by Fregg on the July 31st, 2007

An article on the GMTV website has claimed that one in seven people experience some form of tinnitus – a form of noise in the ears or head that is often described as ringing, whistling, humming or buzzing in the ears. It also emerged that 70% of GP’s surveyed have never had any form of training on the condition.

The research has revealed that tinnitus can cause major distress and suffering. An article on Free Press Releases reported a 65 year old man who became suicidal after the condition left him feeling distraught.

The word tinnitus derives from the latin word tinnire meanting ‘to ring. It can come in many different forms, from ringing, buzzing, whirring or whistling. Alcohol can make the symptoms worse, and the condition can occur at any age.

There are ways to manage tinnitus.  The Sussex Audiology Centre offers tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) to help to relieve the distress associated with the condition.  If you are concerned or wish to see kfurther advice on the condition, visit the tinnitus website at http://www.tinnitus.org/.

Noticed that they also talked about this website www.tuneouttinnitus.org.uk

Might be good for people who don’t know much about tinnitus.
