The stages that a person goes through when being fitted with a hearing aid are incredibly important, and should be handled carefully and professional to ensure that the aid is the right one for the individual, and that it is fitted correctly.

The following stages are a guide to the steps that should be followed when being fitted for a hearing aid:

Hearing Aid Assessment
The first stage would be to book an appointment for a hearing aid assessment with an audiologist. This will help to determine what needs to be done, and whether a hearing aid is actually necessary.

Which Hearing Aid?
Once it has been identified that you do in fact need a hearing aid, the next stage is to discover what hearing aid is best for you, be it a particular type of digital hearing aid, a bone anchored hearing aid or something else altogether.
This can be discussed with your audiologist, should you feel comfortable – but it is important not to feel pressured, and is a good idea to take a family member or close friend with you to consultations.

Hearing Aid Fitting
The fitting of the hearing aid is another incredibly important stage. Ensure the hearing aid fits snugly and securely, and do not accept an ill-fitting product.

Fine Tuning
Once the hearing aid has been fitted, a good audiologist will provide follow up appointments to fine tune your hearing aid, making sure you are getting the most out of the product.

Costs
Know the total cost of your hearing aid, from consultation to purchase, fitting and follow up appointments. This will avoid any surprises down the line and will reduce any stress, enabling you to concentrate on making sure the product is working correctly for you.

Other options
Always consider your other options and discuss these with your audiologist. A good audiologist will be frank with you, and should always provide you with the correct diagnosis and treatments available.
