Australia announced a ban on cosmetic surgery in all national public hosptitals, a very bold move, could this catch on to North America and Europe?

Personally speaking I think it’s a great move, why should my taxes pay for some woman’s breast augmentation? Or similarly why should I give away 22% of my hard earned cash just so someone who’s never seen the inside of a gym can go for some liposuction? If you want that stuff done then you can pay for it! I more than happy for my taxes to go towards healthcare for people who are dying or are in need of medical attention. But to suggest that I pay for unnecassary surgery, to me atleast, is absurd.

Being in the UK I am unsure of how it works exactly in the US, perhaps someone could comment below and let me know, but I know they have such a range of dedicated professionals in the cosmetic surgery industry that I would find it unlikely for it to be paid for by the government. But if it is ruled out all together what sort of reprocussions will that have if any? Its hard to say.

In the UK I don’t think it would make a huge difference, which is even more reason to support it as a motion. Though I should stress that I have no problem at all with having cosmetic reconstructive surgery on the National Health Service as, if I was in an accident I would most certainly want that option for myself.

The question that still weighs heavily on my mind is how did cosmetic surgery get onto the NHS in the first place? What were they thinking when they suggested that? Its alike to suggesting that you insurance company should pay for a new paint job on your car whenever you feel like it.
The insurance is there for if you have an accident, and the car needs to be fixed, NOT just to make it look prettier. I wonder how insurers would react should anyone imply that they should pay for resprays as and when their customers requested them? Laughter, comes to mind!

It appears that Cosmetic Surgery Holidays are all the rage; according to a blog on Travel Insurance Direct the use of cosmetic surgery practices in exotic destinations is becoming all the rage.

The trend is this, go abroad to get the cosmetic surgery performed; then book yourself into a Health Spa to convalesce.

Have UK hospitals got to such a low-level that people would rather go abroad for major surgery? I can’t think that I would like to travel a great distance after having a surgeon take lumps out of me!

India is one of the countries leading the way in this field. With no disrespect to any Indians, surely the thought of travelling to a hospital in the sub-continent would not have been a consideration 15 years ago? The bigger picture suggests UK Hospitals are simply no longer trusted and the use of a hospital is more necessity than choice.

An article on Carefair.com has highlighted the influence reality TV shows have on decisions to undergo plastic surgery procedures.

A study has shown that four out of five people have chosen to undergo some form of cosmetic surgery after watching surgery on a reality TV show and 57% of 42 patients interviewed said they frequently watched shows involving cosmetic surgery procedures.
